Footy finals, the spring boutique range and a big Cup Weekend.
Spring is when Sorrento is at its most itself. The limestone shopfronts catch a crisp, clean light that suits a slow walk down Ocean Beach Road. The Sharks are deep into finals, the boutiques are stocked with the new season’s range, and Melbourne Cup Weekend is building toward one of the village’s biggest of the year. The tail end of the whale migration is still passing the back beach, and the first of the season’s produce is turning up on café menus. It’s a season with its own case to make, not a placeholder before summer.
The LightSpring mornings on the peninsula are crisp and clear, and the limestone shopfronts along Ocean Beach Road catch the light at an angle that suits a camera and a coffee in hand equally well. It’s the kind of light that makes an ordinary walk down the strip worth taking slowly.
The WildlifeThe tail end of the humpback and southern right whale migration runs into September, so a spring visit can still turn up a sighting from the lookout rotunda above the back beach. Pair it with a walk along the cliff track and it’s a proper morning out, wetsuit optional.
The ProduceSpring menus around the village bring in the first of the season’s avocado and good local eggs, alongside sourdough from bakeries that take the process seriously. It’s a genuinely different eating season to summer, built around what’s actually in season rather than what travels well in the heat.
The FootySpring means finals season for the Sorrento Sharks, and on game day the best seats in the village are at Hotel Sorrento and The Continental Sorrento, both within an easy walk of the ground. It’s one of the more local ways to spend a Saturday here, a beer, a view of the bay, and a game on.
The FashionSorrento’s boutique scene comes into its own in spring, with a genuinely large range of stores along Ocean Beach Road stocking the new season’s arrivals. Whatever the look, from recognised labels to one-off finds you won’t see anywhere else on the peninsula, spring is when the racks are freshest and worth working through properly.
Cup WeekendMelbourne Cup Weekend is one of the biggest on the Sorrento calendar. The sun tends to be out, the gardens along the foreshore are in full bloom, and the whole village turns out for it, cafés and pubs full, everyone dressed for the occasion. If there’s one weekend to build a spring visit around, this is it.
150 YearsThis spring also marks 150 years of the Koonya Hotel, one of the village’s oldest and most recognisable buildings. Worth a visit on its own merits any time of year, it’s an especially good excuse for a drink this season while the milestone’s being marked.
The WaterSun out, flowers out, finals on the telly at the pub. Spring, doing what spring does best.
Spring swimming in Bass Strait isn’t a warm-water proposition, but the back beach in September and October carries a swell worth surfing or simply watching from the dunes. Front beach, more sheltered, becomes a realistic option for a paddle by late October, bay-calm and easy.
Bring A JacketBring a jacket for the evenings and layer up for an early start, but the days themselves are mild and easy to spend outdoors, whether that’s a walk, a swim, or a long lunch with a view of the bay.
